I remember when I was in a Boardroom style group of business people, and the theme was Mind Over Mattress. You know when the weather turns a little bit colder, you stay in bed a bit longer….sometimes you may even doze off! What’s this got to do with business I thought?

It’s Monday morning and the start of a new week. Hopefully, you’ve had at least the Sunday off from work. But whilst switching back into work mode may be easy, but how often do you take 30 minutes – 1 hour to plan out your week? How often do you clarify what a successful week would look like? What do you want to achieve this week that would make a difference to your business?

As Melbourne business coach, many of my clients are great at getting the action list underway Monday morning and picking up the urgent matters from the prior week. And if like many business owners, the demand of your customers and staff or your bankers is a never-ending list, then you hop straight back into operational mode.

But as a business owner, the most important task for you is to set the directions for the business. And to do this, you need to find a timeslot for planning/reflection each week. The best way to do this is to give yourself permission not to do operational tasks.

When customers and others are demanding outcomes, things become urgent. And before you know it, your to-do list is so long, and all your time disappears. As a business coach I know these type of things may not be important, but because you are reacting to a situation, it’s easy to get sidetracked.

So, what has this got to do with Mind Over Mattress? Unless you have a clear plan of what you want to achieve and by when then days or weeks can go by and you have dozed off from running the business – it may be that the business is running you.

I have learned is that Mind Over Mattress it is a great metaphor for planning your day/week, and setting your priorities. If the business is running you, then the longer you are “staying in bed and dozing off”.
